Gumbo YaYa's catered a New Orleans-style buffet offering shrimp etouffee, jambalaya, red beans & rice, muffallettas and gumbo. The Von Barlow Jazz Journey band entertained and funds were raised to support the nonprofit's many programs serving homeless and low-income families.

Red Rose Ball : Viva La Rosa was the theme of the 32nd annual Red Rose Ball presented by St. Vincent's HealthCare Foundation on February 9. A sell-out crowd of 500 patrons filled the ballroom of the Marriott at Southpoint for an evening of dining, dancing and bidding on live and silent auction items. The benefit raised $375,000 to support the Spine & Brain Institute at St. Vincent's.

Mary Poppins Opening : The hit Broadway musical Mary Poppins was presented by the FSCJ Artist Series for an eight-show run beginning on January 22. More than 2,500 people attended the opening night festivities which included a plethora of family activities, as well as kid-friendly treats from the Times-Union Center caterer, SAVOR. After the show, kids were invited down to the stage to join in a Chat Back with some of the performers from the show. A supercalifragilisticexpialidocious time was had by all!

ZOOMA : Nearly 700 runners participated in the ZOOMA women's half marathon and 5K races at The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, on January 19. The girls' weekend getaway was filled with perks in addition to the race itself, including a “mocktail” reception the evening before the race, a pre-race Fitness Expo, a signature swag bag and training care package, recovery yoga and a post-race party on the lawn of the Ritz. The festivities included wine, massages and shopping. The girls who completed the half marathon also received a souvenir ZOOMA necklace. Muscle Milk Light was the primary sponsor of the event.

River Garden Gala : The 20th annual River Garden Gala drew more than 500 supporters to the Renaissance Resort at the World Golf Village on November 17 for “Imagine...A Walk Through Our Emerald City.” Guests eased on down a yellow brick road into the Emerald City Gift Emporium, a room filled with silent auction items, anchored by a large hot-air balloon. Following a cocktail reception, “Dorothy” and “Toto” beckoned the crowd to enter the Emerald City Ballroom for a seated dinner and dancing, along with a lively performance by the Chez-zam entertainment group. Visitors to the magical land each received an emerald crystal paperweight as a souvenir of the evening.

Art & Antiques Show : The 36th annual Art & Antiques Show was presented by The Women's Board of Wolfson Children's Hospital at the Prime Osborn Convention Center the first weekend in December, kicking off the holiday social season. The Opening Night Party on November 29 featured a Scottish theme, “Highland Fling,” which provided the opportunity for the gentlemen guests to depart from their standard black-tie and tuxedos to don tartan kilts, if they were so inclined. Plaid was the popular fashion choice of the evening, and even the dining rooms were set with long tables reminiscent of a Scottish castle refectory. More than 600 people took advantage of the sneak preview of the art and antiques for sale during the three-day show.

Signature Chefs : On November 1 at The Florida Yacht Club, more than 200 guests enjoyed sampling signature dishes from a dozen top local chefs while raising $126,000 to benefit the March of Dimes. Among the delicious offerings were salmon tartare with avocado mousse from Taverna, beef croustades from III Forks, Thai panang vegetable curry from Biscottis, and seared duck breast with butternut squash puree from Nineteen at TPC Sawgrass. Edgewood Bakery provided assorted cupcakes embellished with a fondant disc honoring the 75th anniversary of the March of Dimes, whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

Festival d'Vine : The 9th annual Festival d'Vine, an outdoor wine-tasting event, was presented by Catholic Charities on November 3 at Treaty Oak Park. More than 600 people flocked to the party in its new location, moved from its usual spot in San Marco Square, to enjoy 200 wines for sampling and accompanying fare provided by 20 top local restaurants. The band Freudian Slip provided musical entertainment. The weather cooperated and the new locale was deemed a success, with more room for the ever-growing crowd.

A Taste of Golf : The seventh annual Taste of Golf benefiting The First Tee of Jacksonville on October 11 attracted a sellout crowd to Deerwood Country Club, where PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem was the guest of honor. Nine local country clubs provided food stations featuring the cuisine of various foreign countries including Jamaica, Malaysia, India, Mexico and Italy. Live and silent auctions provided additional entertainment for the guests and funds for the nonprofit organization. The mission of First Tee is to provide an affordable and accessible youth-centered golf facility where youth can learn the game of golf and the values it teaches in a structured and supportive environment.

Goodwill Fashion Show : The 12th annual Striving to Succeed Luncheon and Celebrity Fashion Show was presented by Goodwill Industries of North Florida October 4 at the Morocco Shrine Center. Speaking of Women's Health : WJCT and Baptist Health partnered to present the 12th annual Speaking of Women's Health forum on August 25 at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville. More than 900 women attended the event, dubbed “Share Good Health.” The symposium included a full day of speakers on a variety of women's wellness issues, personal health screenings, luncheon and a fashion show. Participants also were treated to a Zumba exercise session, free makeovers, massages, complimentary photos, door prizes and more.

Medicine and Miracles : Children's Miracle Network hosted a Celebrity Dinner on May 29 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel which featured members of the Jacksonville Jaguars as table servers. The unique dining experience raised funds and awareness for the pediatric programs at Shands Jacksonville and Wolfson Children's Hospital. The players/waiters entertained guests at their tables, fulfilled various fun and challenging requests, and competed for tip tickets. Boys & Girls Club : The Boys & Birls Club of Northeast Florida presented An Evening in Wine Country on June 22 at the University Center on the University of North Florida campus. The inaugural event offered samplings of a variety of wines paired with heavy hors d'oeuvres, including Southwest chicken egg rolls, shrimp ceviche, pecan-crusted chicken, tenderloin on sourdough, Tuscan bruschetta and asparagus in phyllo dough. Beer, vintage port wine and Swisher cigars were available on the outside deck. The evening's entertainment included live music and a wine basket raffle.

Spring for the Arts March 23, 2012 : Spring for the Arts Deerwood Country Club was bursting with supporters of the arts on March 23 at the annual fundraiser for the Cathedral Arts project, Spring for the Arts. The throng turned out to honor Marilyn and Pete Carpenter and Mary Virginia Terry as the 2012 Guardian of the Arts while raising money to fund after-school programs in music, dance, drama and the visual arts for nearly 1,500 public school students. The gourmet food and wine-tasting event included live and silent auctions, followed by dancing under the stars to live music from KTG Entertainment.

Jay Fund Gala March 16, 2012 : Jay Fund Gala A sellout crowd packed the ground floor of the Wells Fargo building for the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation Annual Wine Tasting Gala on March 16. More than 200 wines from all over the world were offered along with food tastings provided by 40 of Jacksonville's favorite restaurants. But the main draw of the evening was Coach Coughlin himself, whose friends and fans lined up to congratulate the former Jaguars coach on his recent Super Bowl victory with the NY Giants. All proceeds from the event will go to his Foundation's mission of benefiting local children suffering from cancer.

Root Ball February 25, 2012 : Root Ball The 5th annual Root Ball presented by Greenscape of Jacksonville attracted nearly 200 “tree-huggers” to the Garden Club the evening of February 25. The event also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Greenscape Flowering Tree Sale, held earlier that day. Guests enjoyed cocktails and passed appetizers of ham biscuits and fried oysters, followed by a buffet dinner including mango glazed salmon, roasted pork loin roulade and pulled BBQ chicken. Dancing to the sounds of Tangee Renee brought the crowd to their feet.

Red Rose Ball February 24, 2012 : Red Rose Ball St. Vincent's HealthCare Foundation hosted the 31st annual Red Rose Ball February 24 at the Jacksonville Marriott at Southpoint. The black-tie event was sold out, with more than 500 people turning out and helping to raise $340,000 to support St. Vincent's HOPE program. Guests perused more than 150 silent auction items on display during a cocktail reception in the hotel lobby. Dinner followed in the ballroom with entertainment provided by 176 Keys Dueling Pianos and a live auction. After- dinner dancing to the live band Party Train capped off the evening.

Rotary Gala February 11, 2012 : Rotary Gala The Rotary Club of Jacksonville celebrated its 100th birthday with a Centennial Gala February 11 at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront. Revelers enjoyed cocktails and a silent auction in the lobby overlooking the river, followed by a seated dinner and dancing in the ballroom. The black-tie event was one of several celebrations commemorating the organization's anniversary. Along with 28 other area clubs, Florida's first Rotary Club donated a mobile health unit to St. Vincent's HealthCare to help those in need in Duval, Clay, St. Johns, Nassau, Putnam and Baker counties.

Carpe Circa February 9, 2012 : Carpe Circa The Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association hosted its inaugural “Seize the Date” Bachelor & Bachelorette Auction February 9 at The River Club. An unexpectedly large crowd of more than 300 bidders turned out for the auction, scoffing up all the bruschetta, potstickers, sliders and chicken skewers to be found on the hors d'oeuvres table. All the single ladies and gents strutting their stuff were rewarded with dates and the big winner was Jacksonville Area Legal Aid, the beneficiary of the first-time event.

Antiques Show : Antiques Show The Women's Board of Wolfson Children's Hospital celebrated the 35th anniversary of the Art & Antiques Show with a Deco & Diamonds-themed Opening Night Party on December 1 at the Prime Osborn Convention Center. The black-tie event kicked off the holiday season in style, with nearly 1,000 guests in all their finery enjoying a sneak preview of the art treasures for sale during the 4-day show. The gala featured a cocktail reception followed by a buffet dinner of beef tenderloin, quail and salmon; and, in a departure from the usual format, the evening concluded with dancing to the music of a Big Band Orchestra.

Empty Bowls : Empty Bowls Luncheon Second Harvest, the Food Bank of North Florida, hosted the 27th annual Empty Bowls Luncheon November 15 at the Prime Osborn Convention Center. More than 60 artists, organizations and schools created hand-crafted bowls for the event; some were offered for purchase in a silent auction, but most were given to those who attended the luncheon as a reminder of the plight of the hungry in our area. Celebrity servers dished up chicken noodle soup provided by Chik-fil-A and bread rolls donated by Panera to the nearly 1,400 diners at the event.

Nemours Gala : Nemours Gala Nearly 450 supporters of Nemours Children's Clinic turned out for a gala evening at A Night with Nemours, October 21, at the Terrace Suite at EverBank Field. Guests were served cocktails and hors d'oeuvres of bruschetta and chicken sliders at a reception on the terrace overlooking the football stadium before enjoying a seated dinner of NY strip steak, grilled salmon and herb chicken . A silent auction offered more than 80 gift choices for early Christmas shoppers. More than $150,000 was raised to benefit the Nemours Asthma Center for children suffering from the most common chronic disease of childhood.

JDRF Gala : JDRF Gala The “Going for Gold” Miracles Gala benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was held October 22 at Sawgrass Marriott Resort. Shannon Miller, the most decorated gymnast in U.S. history, was the the celebrity honoree. Patrons were greeted by JDRF youth ambassadors and performing gymnasts from TNT Gymnastics and Fitness. Jaxson De Ville also provided his unique brand of entertainment. Guests enjoyed passed hors d'oeuvres of tenderloin & boursin crostini, green apple & brie crostini, marinated shrimp on skewers and egg rolls while bidding on a variety of silent auction items. Following a seated dinner of beef tenderloin and crab cakes, the program began with children with type 1 diabetes sharing their personal stories. The evening concluded with a live auction and dancing to the music of the Boogie Freaks. More than 350 people attended the gala, helping to raise $252,000 for the foundation.

THE PLAYERS Community Celebration May 8, 2012 : THE PLAYERS Community Celebration Hundreds of VIPs, sponsors, vendors, employees, charities and friends of THE PLAYERS gathered at the TPC Sawgrass clubhouse for THE PLAYERS Community Celebration on May 8. Guests enjoyed cocktails and a strolling dinner featuring crab cakes, tacos, cioppino, strip loin of beef, wild mushroom agnolotti and Tuscan bread and cheese. Caricature portrait artists, jugglers and a photo booth provided entertainment during the evening; but the main event was a concert by The Fab Four, a Beatles tribute band, who looked and sounded so much like the originals that there were girls in the audience imitating their screaming fans.

Florida Theatre Celebration April 10, 2012 : Florida Theatre Celebration The Florida Theatre celebrated 85 years in existence as one of the oldest remaining high-style movie palaces built in Florida during the Mediterranean Revival architectural boom of the 1920s. Guests were invited to the theater on April 10 for a celebration where they enjoyed adult beverages and heavy hors d'oeuvres provided by Anthony's Catering. Small groups were invited to participate in a tour of the building, including the backstage and dressing rooms, and to learn all the fascinating historic facts about the theater and its furnishings. Opened in 1927, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The menu included calorie and carbohydrate counts for all the food items, for the benefit of the diabetics in attendance, drawing attention to the daily vigilance required by those afflicted with the disease. The evening concluded with an awards ceremony and live auction, followed by dancing to the sounds of the Sunjammer Band.
